FORT PIERCE, Fla. -- 18-year-old Boca Raton resident Ryan Shapiro is lucky to be alive after a shark attack in the Fort Pierce inlet Saturday. "I went to go paddle for a wave and the shark just grabbed my arm and the shark landed on my back and gave me a laceration on my back," Shapiro said. The 18-year-old surfer says he got into a wrestling match after the shark had bitten him on the arm.
"When I got bit I was screaming I was just like, 'shark! Help me!'" Ryan certainly did not win nor did he lose. He had seven tendons ripped to shreds but his mother is grateful he still has 10 fingers and 10 toes. "I'm not telling anyone to stop surfing, because I am not going to stop surfing. I want to surf right after this. I just want people to be aware of their surroundings and to be careful of sharks because this is the season for them," Shapiro's mother said.
